Crafting Your Career Narrative: A Framework for Bold Moves in 2025

At The Collective, we believe this is the year to push boundaries and take that daring step forward in your career—whether it’s to see where it leads or simply to break through barriers, real or imagined. Our goal is to provide leaders with the tools, support, and inspiration to make these leaps and redefine what’s possible.

One often overlooked barrier to getting noticed is having a compelling personal bio. Suppose you’re not already in the habit of speaking at events, contributing to content, or pursuing opportunities that put you in the spotlight. In that case, your bio might be outdated or nonexistent. Crafting a bio takes effort, and keeping it fresh as your career evolves is essential.

Having just gone through the painstaking process of updating mine, I realised how challenging it can be. I also saw the need for a simple framework to make it easier for others to showcase their achievements and stand out. That’s why we developed this bio framework.

Yes, tools like ChatGPT can help with wordsmithing, but they’re only as good as the context and prompts you provide. Without a clear structure, you risk ending up with something that sounds generic or completely off-brand. Our framework is designed to help you avoid that and create a bio that truly represents who you are, what you’ve accomplished, and where you’re headed.

Simplified Professional Bio Framework

A great bio answers these key questions: Who is she? What has she done? What does she do? What can she do? It should also reflect your values and passions while including a call-to-action to guide the reader on what to do next.

1. Name and Background (Who is she?)

Introduce yourself and provide context about your professional identity.

Questions to Prompt Thinking:

  • What is your name and professional title?

  • What is your current role or primary focus?

  • What industry or field do you specialise in?

  • How many years of experience do you have?

Example Sentence:
"[Name] is [role] specialising in [area of expertise]. With over [years] of experience in [industry], [name] has made significant contributions to [key achievements]."

2. Professional Roles, Achievements, and Geographical Focus (What has she done? What does she do?)

Highlight your key achievements, current responsibilities, and regional expertise.

Questions to Prompt Thinking:

  • What notable roles have you held?

  • What are two or three significant achievements or projects you’ve led?

  • What is your primary responsibility in your current role?

  • What regions do you work in, and do you have global or regional expertise?

"With a career spanning [regions], [name] has held pivotal roles such as [notable position] and led [key project], creating impact in [specific focus areas]. Currently, [she/he/they] focuses on [current responsibilities]."

3. Philosophy and Values (What drives her?)

Share what motivates you and how your values shape your professional approach.

Questions to Prompt Thinking:

  • What motivates you in your work?

  • What is a key belief or principle you follow in your career?

  • How does your personal philosophy align with your professional goals?

4. Education Credentials (What can she do?)

5. Passions, Interests, and Impact Work (Who is she beyond work?)

Include hobbies, personal interests, and volunteer contributions that reflect your personality and values.

Questions to Prompt Thinking:

  • What hobbies or passions do you pursue outside of work?

  • Are you involved in any volunteer work or impact initiatives?

  • How do these activities align with your personal or professional life?

Example Sentence:
